Skyping with a Zookeeper

Today the second graders met with Megan Fox, a zookeeper at the Nashville Zoo in Nashville, Tennessee via Skype.  The students asked her questions about teamwork, and the roles and responsibilities of the people who work together at the zoo.  Others asked her questions about how animals and spider monkeys use teamwork and what roles and responsibilities they have within their group.

Second Grade Information

Welcome to a new school year!  This year brings much excitement as we journey through great units to study through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP), the Common Core Standards for Language Arts and Mathematics, the Next Generation Science Standards and the Vermont State Grade Expectations for History and Social Sciences.  Please see the attached list of learning topics we will explore in Second Grade this year.
We are continuing to grow as an IB candidate school working towards becoming an authorized IB school.  We hope to achieve this in the 2017-2018 school year.  Our students have been experiencing many elements of the PYP including the IB Learner Profile, the IB transdisciplinary skills, the PYP attitudes and Key Concepts.  This school year I hope to build upon their foundational understanding of the PYP and to strengthen the parents’, families’ and community’s understanding of it as well.  If we can all use these terms with our students they will become part of their everyday vocabulary and they will gain full understanding of their meaning.

Classroom Behavior Tool  http://www.classdojo.com/
Second Graders will be using a classroom management tool called “Class Dojo”.  Students are awarded points for positive behaviors and they lose points for negative behaviors.  The behaviors they earn and lose points for are put into a daily report which I will share with them in class and with you through email.
You may have received your student’s Class Dojo code in an email already.   Students can use this code to go into the Class Dojo site to customize their own avatar (Dojo character).  This is not required as everyone has been been given an avatar.  Students may design their own if they’d like to.  Please explore Class Dojo by clicking the link above.

Digital Resource Packet
The Class Dojo code is also enclosed in a Digital Resource Packet that I will send home.  It will have student passwords, usernames and codes needed to use their web tools at home.   The information will be for Scholastic Book Club, Scholastic News, Class Dojo, IXL Math, RAZ-Kids, Reading A-Z, Xtra-Math, Discovery Education, SumDog (math) and their Google account.  Their Google account will give them access to Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Drawing, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Classroom and Google Sites.

Students are welcome to celebrate their birthday in school if they choose to.  Please let me know if you would like to send in a treat before your child’s birthday.  Students with summer birthdays may choose any day during the school year to celebrate their birthday with the class.  Treats should be easy to serve and eat, not require cutting, or utensils.  If your child has any food allergies please let me know so I am aware of them before serving any food in the classroom.

The second graders will have a morning snack time every day. Students should bring healthy snacks such as cut up fruit or vegetables, dairy products like cheese and yogurt or whole grain products.  Please avoid sending processed or sugary foods.  No candy is ever allowed as part of snack or lunch.  They should only have one snack for snack time and they may bring in a healthy drink.  They may also buy snack and milk at school.  Snack is $1.00.

Schedule of Special Classes
The second graders have the following special classes:
  • Art Class - Monday at 9:55
  • Physical Education Class – Monday and Tuesday at 8:30
  • Library Class – every other Wednesday at 1:30

Scholastic Book Orders
Scholastic Book order forms will be sent home throughout the year. Your orders are valuable as each order accumulates points which I can use to buy books for our classroom.  Books may be ordered online at anytime by visiting the website and using this code: CLASS CODE:  L7YK9 .
You may also order books using the order form that is sent home.  The form should be returned by the date stamped on it.  Cut the order form out and return it to me with a check made out to Scholastic Books.

“Home Learning Activities” . . . aka “Homework”
At this initial time of the year, all of the student assignments will be done in school.  In the future, they will have “Home Learning Activities” assigned to them, also know as “Homework”.  As we progress through the year, I will send you more information to help you understand how your student is learning in the classroom and what activities they need to do at home.

We have a class web page called Second Grade at TDS
for you to visit.  It currently has a welcome to the students, the list of birthdays and some web links. The link is:  http://secondgradeattds.blogspot.com/
If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.  You may send a note, an email, or call me.  I will return your call as soon as possible.
If you haven’t received any emails from me already, please send me your email address so I can add it to my Second Grade Parent email group..  Email is the fastest and easiest way for me to be in contact with you.  However, please use good judgement when sending emails. Email is not always an appropriate way to communicate especially conveying any confidential information.  Please ask me to call you in such circumstances and I will do the same for you.
Student Responsibility
Finally, in second grade, your child is expected to come into the classroom each morning by his or herself.  If you bring your child to school please say good bye at the front door.  It is important that students learn responsibility for themselves in terms of getting their own things out of their backpack and coming into the classroom prepared for the day.  The Second Graders will be handled with patience and will be given ample opportunities to develop this responsibility.
Please know that your children are very important to me.  My goal for them is to be safe, secure and happy learners each day in our classroom.  Their happiness and success are my priorities each day. I look forward to working with you and your students this school year.
